Extramobile: the future of public transport in Lille Metropole

A new approach to mobility

By 2035, Lille Metropole will have 115,000 additional inhabitants and 80,000 new jobs within its borders. This will mean between 600,000 and 700,000 additional daily journeys. These demographic changes are forcing Lille Metropole to adapt the modes of transport within its territory.

This is the framework for these new transport projects: "Extramobile". The projects included in Extramobile will offer new solutions for efficient, economical, ecological and high-quality travel.

4 new projects

This new ambition is structured around 4 major projects: the construction of two new tramway lines and the deployment of two Bus Rapid Transit lines.

The tramway lines will be as follows: one will link the towns of the Roubaix and Tourcoing metropolitan area, while the other will connect the city of Lille with the towns in its inner suburbs. 50km of new lines will be built. The two existing tramway lines will be modernised. The trams will be replaced from 2026 to make them more comfortable and efficient. They will also carry more passengers. The target is for trams to run every 6 to 8 minutes during rush hour, at a speed of around 20 km/h.

The Bus Rapid Transit (BNHS) is a bus line designed and operated like a tramway line, with increased regularity and frequency thanks in particular to priority at traffic lights and a route mostly on dedicated lanes.

These 4 new projects will cross 26 municipalities in the Metropolitan area, stretching for almost 75 km. They will serve 430,000 inhabitants and 300,000 jobs.

Going further

In conjunction with Extramobile, the Metropolitan area is developing a new vision of mobility for 2035 to encourage changes in behaviour. Extramobile is a commitment to the environment, improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Extramobile will make travelling easier and improve the quality of life of all the Metropolitan area's inhabitants.

The arrival of new modes of transport is an opportunity to rethink public spaces and create :

- More green areas,

- Dedicated, safe spaces for all modes of transport (pedestrians, cyclists, cars, etc.),

- Facilities to encourage walking and cycling.

The Metropolitan area is also developing new services to encourage more rational use of the car, such as electromobility, car-sharing and the Ecobonus programme.
