Lille Metropole participates in the European Week for Waste Reduction
Lille Metropole is committed to reducing per capita waste production by 50kg by 2030. To achieve this objective, it is mobilising inhabitants by taking part in the European Week for Waste Reduction.
A special focus on food waste
The European Week for Waste Reduction is taking place between 16th and 24th November. For this year's event, Lille Metropole has decided to focus on reducing food waste.
Food waste represents indeed a significant part of the global waste generated in France and in Europe. At the metropolitan level, the average weight of food wasted is about 140,000 tons. The sectors that generate the most food waste are consumption (43%) and production (32%).
This is why Lille Metropole is committed to reducing food waste on its territory by 50%. This objective is in line with the national law on Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy (AGEC) of February 2020.
A packed local programme for all ages
During the European Week for Waste Reduction, a number of workshops and events are organised throughout the territory such as:
- Practical workshops on how to eat better and waste less, as well as on other waste reduction themes;
- Repair-coffees;
- Movies and documentaries screenings;
- Toy drives, etc.
Lille Metropole is also dedicated to address the issue of food wasting in the school canteens. This is why during this week, it will organised a challenge between 12 participating schools to reduce the amount of food wasted during lunch in the canteen by 30%. Moreover, since 2020 is working with volunteer schools to help them reduce food waste. This action is part of its Local Programme for the Prevention of Household and Similar Waste.
