The EIB and the European Commission support up to €276 million Lille Metropole’s investments in sustainable mobility
Lille Metropole is implementing an ambitious urban mobility investment programme called “GREEN MObility” (GREENMO) with financial support from the EU
What is the project GREENMO?
This ambitious investment programme will benefit from both a public and private EU investment. It is financed by a €245 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), supplemented by a €31.5 million grant from the European Commission.
The project will fund several investments through the territory. First, it will cover the modernisation and upgrade of the tramway network. Moreover, the money will be invested into the renewal of the existing stock of material such as new tramway trains more modern and comfortable, and new buses either working with natural gas or hydrogen. Finally, the plan includes also active modes of mobility with an ambitious target of developing 220 kilometres of bike lanes in the metropolitan area.
What are the objective and expected impacts?
The objective of the project is to support the transition towards a more sustainable mobility, improve accessibility of the transport network and develop active types of mobility. The goal is to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions rate and contribute to the change from fossil fuel-based modes of transports to sustainable modes of transports.
This investment programme will have several positive impacts on the metropolitan area. It will reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants linked to commuting, thereby improving air quality. This will enable inhabitants will benefit from an improved quality of life.
A broader perspective
With the GREENMO project, Lille Metropole is also participating in a broader target defined in our Local Climate Air Energy Plan (PCAET). This metropolitan plan is directly contributing to the European Green Deal objective and the ambition of a neutral continent by 2050. Considering that the transport sector is responsible for a significant part of those emissions, the GREENMO project will also feed our PCAET which defined the Metropole strategy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% in 2030 and by 89% in 2050 (compared to 1990 levels).
