Improving the place of nature and water in the Metropolitan area
On the 19th of April of this year, the Lille Metropole’s Council adopted a Nature and Water strategy. What are the main objectives and actions of this new strategy?
Against a backdrop of ever-increasing demand to adapt to climate change, Lille Metropole has adopted this ambitious strategy. This action plan promises to work towards protecting biodiversity and improving the living environment and health of local residents. This includes using nature as a means of combating drought, flooding and the urban heat island effect.
Ambitious targets
The strategy sets ambitious targets.
In urban, agricultural and natural areas:
- To increase publicly accessible green and nature areas by at least 500 ha between 2021 and 2035.
- To have at least one million additional trees planted between 2024 and 2035 on the territory, by the Lille Metropole and other private and public stakeholders.
- Allocate €1 million per year to tree pits and greening at the foot of facades in urban areas.
- To study the possibility of infiltrating rainwater into plots of land, disconnecting it from the sewerage system, for 100% of public space development projects carried out by Lille Metropole.
On the major green and blue routes criss-crossing the territory:
- Create at least 170 km of greenways between 2021 and 2035.
- Launch the restoration of 600 km of rivers and waterways over the period 2022-2035 as part of the plan to reclaim metropolitan rivers and waterways.
What budget?
Lille Metropole will devote a budget of €250 million to implementing the Nature and Water strategy over the period 2024 - 2035, in addition to a budget of €220 million for implementing the plan to restore metropolitan rivers over the period 2022 - 2044.
