Tour de France : a mythic sport event in Lille Metropole !

On July 6th, Lille Metropole hosted the 5th stage of the 109th edition of the Tour de France. The riders started from the headquarters of Lille Metropole to Wallers - Arenberg.

During the day's stage, the riders travelled 155 kilometers through 12 Lille Metropole’s municipalities. The opportunity to see the legendary advertising caravan and to encourage the riders who took the start, eight years after the last passage of the Tour de France in Lille Metropole, when we hosted in 2014, the arrival of the 4th stage in front of the Pierre-Mauroy stadium (Villeneuve d'Ascq).

The Tour de France celebrated its 31st passage through Lille Metropole! In 1906, Lille welcomed, for the first time in its history, the arrival of the first stage of the Tour: 275 kilometers between Paris and Lille, won by the French Emile Georget.

In addition to the economic benefits and the effects on the attractiveness of the territory, the Tour de France is an opportunity for Lille Metropole to promote cycling and soft travelling modes.

Lille Metropole adopted its mobility plan on June 24, 2022 for the period 2022-2035. It will replace the urban mobility plan adopted in April 2011. It will establish the orientation of the metropolitan mobility policy for the next 15 years. In terms of cycling, Lille Metropole aims to respond to the challenges of the ecological transition and wishes to become a "cycling metropolis" by modifying the layout of public spaces and by developing spaces dedicated to bicycles (lines, drawings, etc.)

Alongside mobility, Lille Metropole made the Tour more sustainable. The main way to do so was to raise awareness on waste management among metropolitan inhabitants and visitors. The starting site and the streets of the city were equipped with litter garbage cans. Lille metropole asked the participants to be respectful of the cleanliness of the public space.
